How to read this report seas · wind · tides

1Reading the seas

Two numbers matter: wave height and period (seconds between crests). Period matters more than people realize.

  • Steepness = height ÷ period. The higher it is, the rougher the ride — short, steep chop punishes small boats.
  • 2 ft @ 8s → smooth ride.
  • 4 ft @ 5s → punishing short chop.
  • 4 ft @ 10s → long rollers, much easier.

2Wind & your hull

Calibrated to your boat…

Wind against current: wind blowing against a running tide stacks seas up short and nasty — check direction, not just speed.

    3Tides & bite windows

    Fish move with current.

    • Best inshore bite: last 2 hrs of falling tide and first 2 hrs of rising.
    • Slack tide (10–30 min around H/L): bite usually dies. Reposition.
    • Offshore: tide matters less; moon phase matters more — new and full moons fire up the pelagic bite.
